In today’s thoughts let’s look into the Church of Philadelphia was from A.D. 1750 to the Rapture. The Church of Philadelphia was considered “The Church Christ Loved.” Philadelphia literally means “brotherly love” a church of life, a revived church, because it was a church that returned to the Word of God and taught the Word of God
It was during this period that produced the great revivals in Europe and the British Isles and eventually spreading to America. This period is known today as the modern missionary movement.
Let’s take a look at Revelation 3:7-13 …verse 7 “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true. He is the one who has the key of David. He opens doors, and no one can shut them; he shuts doors, and no one can open them.”
We are never to forget that Christ has the key (authority) and to some extent controls or governs the various kingdoms of this world. In verse 7, Christ reminds His church of His nature… “holiness” just as we are reminded in 1 Peter 1:16 “For he himself has said, “You must be holy because I am holy.” Christ speaks of Himself in this verse as “one who is holy and true.”
Also in John 14:6, Jesus speaks of Himself as the truth, genuine, (perfection and completeness), “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
Again in John 6:32-35, He speaks of Himself as “the true Bread” Jesus said, “I assure you, Moses didn’t give them bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.
The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day of our lives.” Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me will ever be hungry again. Those who believe in me will never thirst.”
Yes, Jesus is “the Bread of life” for He is all we need to sustain life, a life of which calls for a separation from the world’s ideas and ways.
This was the doctrine that the Philadelphia church had of separation from the world…the holiness of Christ, the very nature of God Himself.
Christ praise and approval as stated in Rev.3:8, “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can shut. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.
Rev. 3:9, Look! I will force those who belong to Satan—those liars who say they are Jews but are not—to come and bow down at your feet. They will acknowledge that you are the ones I love.”
Throughout this Church age Christ opened a doorway for the proclamation of the Gospel.
God’s abilities are not limited in opening opportunities today but it will take a Church, an individual who WILL NOT COMPROMISE to gain opportunities. It is IN TRUTH and our responsibility to do right.
It is God’s responsibility to open the doors of opportunity for those who are faithful and serve without fear and reservation. Just as God opened doors of opportunity for Apostle Paul He will also open them for you.
As we read in 1 Corinthians 16:9 “for there is a wide-open door for a great work here, and many people are responding. But there are many who oppose me.” Here we see the authority of Christ and that authority which He gives to this church and individuals who place their trust in Him.
Christ opens the doorway to the nations and has made a way for the Gospel to be preached on the basis of what He has already spoken in Matthew 28:18 “Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth.” Yes, “What He opens no man can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.”Satan always tries to oppose an effective work of God.
It can be noted that it was during this period that the greatest increase of false religions had started yet God commended this Church for obeying His Word without fear and reservation, as we see in verse 8 “…yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.”
Christ disapproval … Not one word!
Christ advice, warning and encouragement in Revelation 3:10, Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world.
Revelation 3:11, Look, I am coming quickly. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown.
–> In verse 10, above Christ has given a promise to this Church, the individual, who both believe and obey the Word of God. They will be rapture before this “great time of testing” begins…before the Great Tribulation Period.
Christ challenge to the church in Revelation 3:12-13, “All who are victorious will become pillars in the Temple of my God, and they will never have to leave it. And I will write my God’s name on them, and they will be citizens in the city of my God—the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven from my God. And they will have my new name inscribed upon them. Anyone who is willing to hear should listen to the Spirit and understand what the Spirit is saying to the churches. ”
This church not only believed the Word of God but obeyed it. The past and present Reformation churches believed the Word but are not characterized by obedience to it.
The Church of Philadelphia is characterized by obedience to His Word; a spirit of revival that promotes evangelism and a missionary-minded church.
Yes, the two greatest things that the Church can do TODAY…
…is to believe the Word and obey the Word. The Church with a faithful Bible-teaching, evangelistic, missionary-minded ministry will see success and growth in the world for which Christ came to offer to all humankind.
Jesus has given us encouraging words…for those who overcome …they will see Him face-to-face.
God is looking for a people who will not compromise…a people who not only believes His Word but obeys it and demonstrates His power.
The Lord Jesus is preparing a people to be justified before God…that is, prepared to meet Him at His coming.
Those that are following His ways…living the way of Holiness and Purity in their habits, customs, traditions, conduct, behavior and a life of wholesomeness, cleanliness, transparency, clarity in following and obeying God’s Word.
This is the overcomer…those that believe and obey! The believer…the one who is a doer of the Word!
Lastly, verse 11, 12 and 13 of Rev. 3…here we see, overcomers are referred to as receiving a “crown”, becoming a “pillar” in the divine Temple, and bearing the signet of “Christ’s New Name”.
The “victorious” the overcomer will possess rewards for keeping the Word with obedience.
Christ IS returning…and SOON! Jesus Christ is COMING BACK…for the overcomer.
Are you expecting HIS RETURN?
As always, Love in Christ Jesus,Paul Lundmark
