Obedience is crucial in our daily lives. It was July 2019, a summer to remember. Gleneva and I embarked on a vacation to the East Coast, planning three weeks of open-air motorcycle rides, through both sunshine and rain, camping throughout. After years of riding and nearly 50,000 miles, this journey was to be our grand finale.
We packed our small motorcycle trailer with everything needed for the trip and set off. We always start our journeys with a prayer, seeking God’s protection, guidance, and the wisdom to act rightly at the right time.
Traveling down a curvy mountain road, towing our loaded trailer, we approached a sharp right turn. Our speed exceeded the recommended 15 mph.
As we navigated the bend at our current speed, the trailer’s weight shifted us into the opposite lane. My wife cried out to Jesus; facing the guardrail, I urged her to hold on to it to prevent the motorcycle from tumbling down the embankment. We halted just inches from an oncoming car.
After signaling for traffic to proceed, we cautiously rounded the corner and entered a nearby town. Shaken by the close call, we thanked God for His safeguarding. With tears on her cheeks, Gleneva and I stopped to rest on a brick ledge.
While there, an elderly man in a trench coat, umbrella in hand, crossed the street to us. He pointed at me and sternly advised, “When the speed limit is 15 miles per hour, you must go only 15 miles per hour.”
He turned and walked back across the street. It was impossible for him to have seen the road we had just traveled. I firmly believe he was a divine messenger, sent with a command to obey. Indeed, for the remainder of our journey, I heeded the signs attentively.
