God Answered My Desire

In late summer of 2009, at the age of 54 and with my daughter now married, I considered riding a motorcycle again. My wife and I had talked about joining the motorcycle group at our church, and she agreed, provided we wore helmets. I remember praying about this new venture. I told my wife it would be great to buy a smaller bike, like a Honda 700 or 750, for around $1500. A few days later, while delivering mail at a medical building, I entered an elevator with a man who remarked on the perfect weather for a bike ride. This caught my interest, and I responded, “A bike ride?” He clarified, “A motorcycle ride.”

Outside, I shared that I was considering buying a used motorcycle to ride with my wife. He inquired, “What kind are you looking for?” I replied, “Perhaps a Honda 700 or 750.” He then asked about my preferred color, and I expressed my fondness for maroon. He revealed he owned a maroon Honda 700, his pride and joy, stored on carpet in his garage. Although it was not for sale, he pondered if I’d be interested. I questioned why I’d view it if it wasn’t for sale. He suggested he might sell it to me after all. When I asked the price, he proposed around $2000. I agreed to see it after work.

That evening, my wife and I inspected the bike. I liked its white-letter tires and sissy bar and maroon color, and it rode well. His wife suggested $1500 would be fair after her research, which delighted us since that was our budget. I told him I’d consider it and respond the next day. He assured me there was no rush since it wasn’t officially for sale. As a truck driver, he’d be away the following day, but his wife would have the title ready if I decided to purchase.

The following evening, I arrived at his home with a trailer to pick up the motorcycle. While paying the owner’s wife, she inquired if I knew her husband, mentioning that there were family members interested in buying the motorcycle. He had told them it wasn’t for sale, yet he was selling it to me. I replied that I had only seen him once, leaving the doctor’s office.

I must say, God knew my heart and granted me my heart’s desire: a maroon Honda 700 with white-lettered tires, all for $1500. One might say God cares about even the small things in life. Indeed, He is a caring and loving Heavenly Father.
