The events unfolded during the winter of 2007. I was scheduled to work my day off. On that day, I was assigned to cover an unattended route. A newly hired Letter Carrier, still within her 90-day probationary period was at risk of termination because she had lost her arrow key the previous day. This key, which we are each assigned daily, unlocks all collection and apartment boxes along our delivery routes and is secured to a long chain to prevent loss.
Upon my arrival at work that morning, the Letter Carrier approached me, hoping to exchange routes to search for the missing key. However, the Supervisor insisted I proceed with my assigned route. I suggested to the Letter Carrier that we pray for divine assistance in locating the key, assuring her that I would remain on the looking for it.
Now, you have to understand that it had snowed over the last couple of days and there was close to one foot of snow on the ground. As I started out delivering from house to house, I kept my eyes open for the key and chain. As the day went on, I had forgotten about the loss key and chain. As I was walking across a lawn covered with snow my head turned sharply to the right and my eyes caught a slight glimpse of something glittering. It caught my attention, so I went over to it. Only about an 8th of an inch of shiny metal stuck out of the snow. Now, remembering about the loss key and chain I reached down and dug into the snow and pulled out a chain and key. I was extremely excited. I immediately called my supervisor who was in the Postmaster’s Office discussing the Letter Carriers dismissal. The Supervisor said I had just saved her job by finding the key.
Upon my return to the office, both the Letter Carrier and the Postmaster greeted me. As I passed the key and chain to the Carrier, the Postmaster remarked, “You should be grateful to Paul; he just saved your job.” I turned to them and replied, “No, be thankful to God, for He is the one who guided me to the key and chain. We prayed with faith and belief, and God led me to it.” She then gazed upward and expressed, “Thank you, God.”
