Faith As a Child

Here is an example of God’s healing power from my youth. I remember one of the first times I reached out and asked God to heal my ailing body. It was the year of 1966. I was in fifth grade and woke up feeling ill. This day was crucial for me as it was the day of the band tryouts.

I was auditioning for the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd part in playing the trumpet, with a strong preference for the 1st part. We were told that missing the tryouts would mean being assigned to the last part, last chair.

Feeling nauseous upon waking, I approached my mother for prayer. Having witnessed God heal family and friends through my mother’s prayers, I knew she had profound faith. I fully expected God to heal me when she prayed that day.

When I requested her prayers, she said, β€œPaul, I am certain God would heal you if I asked Him, but there comes a time when you must have faith for yourself. Ask God for healing with faith, and He will do just that. Now, have some breakfast and head to school, trusting that God will heal you.”

After breakfast, I grabbed my horn case and headed to the bus stop at the corner of the block. I felt queasy as I walked. I prayed to God, stressing the importance of being at the tryouts, and asked for His healing. I thanked Him for listening to my prayer and boarded the bus.

Choosing to sit in the back row due to my discomfort, I was instantly healed the moment I sat down. Overjoyed, I thanked God for the healing.

From that moment, I was completely well, and by day’s end, I secured the first chair in the tryout. My excitement was boundless. Not only had God healed me, but I also achieved 1st chair. All glory to God! He is true to His word. We can indeed triumph over illness when we put our faith in Christ.
